Do you love s’mores but want to skip the little ‘ol mess of assembling them and trying to stuff them into your mouth? Try this easy s’mores dip! It is perfect over the campfire, stove, or even an RV oven. S’mores dip can be made at home too if you are craving s’mores between camping trips.
S’mores Dip Ingredients
.Only two ingredients are necessary for making s’mores dip: chocolate and marshmallows.
It may pay off to be a chocolate snob here. Hershey’s chocolate bars or Ghiradelli milk chocolate chips melt great. And seriously though – cheap chocolate does not taste as good!
Some people use mini marshmallows, but I think the regular large size ones work good.
You may also want to use some butter to grease the bottom of your skillet.

S’mores Dip Over the Campfire
If you are making your s’mores dip over the campfire, you’ll want a cooking grate to set your cast iron skillet or dutch oven on. Some campgrounds have a cooking grate at the fire ring or you can buy one like this. They are affordable and good for other campfire cooking. Or you could set your skillet on top of hot, not flaming, coals.
You could also cook this over a charcoal camp grill.

Keep in mind that if you are using a dutch oven, many models are kinda deep and may make it harder to scoop dip out.
Put your chocolate in the bottom of your skillet. If you are using Hershey’s bars, break them apart so you can arrange them to cover most of the bottom of the skillet. You can just sprinkle chocolate chips to cover the bottom.
Put the marshmallows on top of chocolate. Set them up vertical so they will fit good. Cover your skillet with aluminum foil or the lid on a dutch oven.
Heat for about 5 – 10 minutes until the chocolate melts and marshmallows get puffy and start to brown a little. Cooking times vary depending on how hot your fire or coals are and how far away from the heat your skillet is.
Warning: the skillet will be hot so be careful reaching into it to scoop out your yummy s’mores dip.
S’mores Dip On the Stove
If fire restrictions are in place on your camping trip, you can easily fix this dip on your camp stove.
Assemble the dip ingredients, cover the skillet, and cook on low heat for 5 – 10 minutes. Don’t burn the chocolate by cooking too long. Cast iron retains heat and will continue to melt and keep the chocolate warm.
S’mores Dip in the Oven
If you are camping in an RV and the weather is yucky, just fix this dip in the oven. This is also the perfect way to prepare s’mores dip at home.
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and assemble the chocolate and marshmallows in your skillet or oven safe dish. My camper oven is small, so an oven safe dish or cast iron pan without a handle fits best. The great thing about this recipe is that is is so easy to customize it to the size skillet or pan you have. Bake for about 5-10 minutes.
Delicious Dip Variations
Classic s’more flavor with just chocolate and marshmallows is perfect, but it is easy to add other fun flavors to your s’mores dip.
- Put a few spoonfuls of peanut butter on top of the chocolate. Or mix some mini Reese’s peanut butter cups with the chocolate.
- Drizzle some caramel sauce over the chocolate before adding marshmallows or put it on top of your warm s’mores dip before serving.
- Mix butterscotch chips or crumbled Butterfinger candy bars with the chocolate.
- Sprinkle coconut flakes over the chocolate.
- Sprinkle pecans, walnuts, or almonds on top of the chocolate
Graham crackers provide the traditional s’mores crunch to dip with, but vanilla wafers, Oreos, and fudge striped cookies are other good options. For a sweet and salty mix, try crackers.
