The Easiest Campfire Popcorn

Share the Adventure!

One of my grandkids’ favorite snacks is popcorn so I knew we needed to make it on our camping trips. You can purchase some neat campfire popcorn poppers or use a pan over the campfire, but we choose to make campfire popcorn on a stick. We now make it on every camping trip.

This campfire popcorn method is so easy and no expensive equipment is needed. Each camper can make their own popcorn too. My grandkids love making their own snack over the campfire.

You probably have the following items in your camp kitchen supplies already:

  • Roasting stick – We like the two-pronged forks for making popcorn. You could even use a real stick, but you will probably need to whittle a sharp point on the end of the stick to very carefully puncture the foil
  • Aluminum Foil – We use heavy duty aluminum foil. Regular foil is more likely to tear or burn the popcorn
  • Popcorn kernels. Popcorn kernels are easy to find and inexpensive at most grocery stores.
  • Popcorn seasonings – My grandkids like Kernel Seasons, but you can use chili powder, garlic powder, ranch seasoning, sugar, salt etc.
  • Oil – We love the hint of flavor that coconut oil gives the popcorn
  • A campfire!

The prep for campfire popcorn is super easy. Of course you will need a campfire. The campfire doesn’t need to be big – embers will even work.

Tear off a piece of aluminum foil and lay it flat on the picnic table. Remember each camper will be popping their popcorn so it does not need to be a huge piece – about 18 -24 inches long. I just eyeball it! You could do a larger piece and pop for more than one person, but I have never tried that.

Pull the sides of the foil up a little like you are just beginning to create a boat.

Put two tablespoons of popcorn kernels in the center of each piece of foil.

Put about two tablespoons of oil on top of the popcorn kernels. Some people like to put seasoning on their popcorn before popping, but we usually add it after we have popped it.

Fold up the sides of the aluminum foil, creating a packet, and crimp it all together at the top.

Slide the forks of your roasting stick into the top crimped area of foil.

Hold the foil packet over the campfire to pop the kernels. Shake it gently to help distribute the kernels. You will hear the popcorn beginning to pop. It will only take a few minutes to pop your popcorn, and you can remove it from the heat once the popping slows to about ten seconds between pops.

Let the foil cool enough to handle then open the packet. Transfer the popcorn to serving bowls and add your favorite seasonings. You can toss the popcorn in melted butter or spritz it with olive oil spray to help the seasonings stick. My grandkids aren’t that picky and can’t wait to start eating it!

Enjoy! I don’t think we can have a popcorn eating session around the campfire with seeing who can toss their popcorn pieces into the air and catch it in their open mouth. 😁
